'The earth has music for those who listen'

This Wordsworth quote is paired with a design inspired by Japanese motifs I've been exploring over the last year.

When working a piece like this, with its seeming simplicity, there is no margin for   error: balance, precision and finish need to be seemless.

The paint used for the image and text has a rich and glowing presence, the   decorative leaves to the left are high shine and give a gilded effect.

The piece has been double mounted and hand framed in a simple and soft gold finish.

Nib: Vintage
Paint: Handmade mineral paint

'A few flowers at your feet and above you the stars'

This Victor Hugo quote borders a  Japanese kimono design inspired motif. It is based on a small sample swatch of material held in The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

I was curious about how the design was balanced and then interested in creating an almost cloisonne effect by super loading the drawn shapes with mineral paint.

So much of calligraphy work is about the control and discipline of letter forms, but when working on patterns, I enjoy letting in an element of the unexpected. In this case, it was adding drops of mineral paint on top of  paint flooded shapes and then waiting to see the effect. Here, I was pleased to see the variation this technique has brought to a flat motif.

The text is written on a circle, which is a particular technique and skill that I enjoy working with. The text is large for pointed pen work and has a shadow line added to give the words presence,
